“…the consultation process only helped to lock things in my head and realise there is a craft, or crafts and techniques one can apply.” – BWL participant
“I have always felt at ease and culturally safe when working with [the facilitators]….I would best describe this as being comfortably challenged. … I believe I would not have produced the kind of outcomes I achieved if it weren’t for the warmth they provided and the safe space they created for us aspiring writers.” – BWL participant
The Black Writers Lab (BWL) is a unique, professionally tailored writing program targeting Indigenous artists seeking to develop their skills as writers and to progress their work towards fully developed performance scripts. The express purpose of this program is to support the emergence of new Indigenous writers for theatre and performance, and to seed new works. It is through developing these works and supporting the skills development of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander writers that ILBIJERRI can continue to develop new and contemporary Indigenous plays and performances and keep contributing to the canon of contemporary Australian theatre.
