A refreshing look at contemporary Aboriginality, a new performance art installation, JACKY JACKY IN THE BOX, blows the dust from a lingering perception of Indigenous Australia as an anthropological curiosity.

The installation, which featured five actors rotating through three display cases, is primarily a commentary on the way the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders have been prodded, dissected, theorised about and analysed since they were “discovered”.

Look inside ILBIJERRI’s three glass museum cabinets and you won’t see a boomerang, a stone tool or a black statue in a lap lap. You might see a young professional in a three-piece suit. You might see a girl listening to an ipod. You might see more than you bargained for.
