BlackWrights is ILBIJERRI Theatre Company’s brand-new artist development program aimed at bringing new First Nations work to the stages of Australia. The program will create a culturally safe and nurturing space that will empower First Nations artists to share our stories through theatre.

BlackWrights consists of two program streams – the Creators Program and our Master Labs series.

The BlackWrights Creators Program is a paid opportunity to develop your work with intensive support from ILBIJERRI over a 12-month period.

The BlackWrights Master Labs are a series of hands-on theatre workshops for First Nations artists and creatives.

Successful applicants in the Creators Program are guaranteed a place in the Master Labs.

BlackWrights is supported by the Australian Government through the Indigenous Languages & Arts Program.

Creators Program

The Creators Program delivers real industry opportunities for dynamic First Nations storytellers. We are seeking expressions of interest from First Nations playwrights and theatre devisors. From emerging to established, concepts to developed works, all proposals are eligible and will be considered.

Over 12 months, 4 successful applicants will receive:

  • $10,000 each
  • Regular one-on-one sessions with ILBIJERRI creative and/or producing staff in person or via Skype
  • Participation in 3 master classes/labs in Melbourne
  • 2 x week-long creative development sessions with performers and creatives
  • Public reading/showing of your work at the end of the 12 months
  • The opportunity to showcase work to presenters

Master Labs

As part of the BlackWrights program ILBIJERRI will present three Master Labs for First Nations artists and creatives.


Free Theatre Master Lab – 8-12 October 2018

Free Theatre uses dialogue theatre techniques to work in community and conflict contexts. Free Theatre will deliver a master lab using their toolkit of applied theatre techniques including group story & dialogue exercises (identity mapping), engaged theatre (dialogue theatre & image theatre in community) and problem-solving approaches (art of peace). Through this week-long master lab participants will the learn how to use theatre as a tool for social change in their own communities.


Introduction to Dramaturgy (with Louise Gough and Kamara Bell-Wykes) – 24-25 November 2018 

As more and more First Nations playwrights are creating theatre work the need for First Nations dramaturgs is more urgent than ever. But what is dramaturgy and how do you go about it? Using a combination of Western and First Nations approaches this two-day master lab will develop the skills and understandings you need to transform a good story into a great one.


Theatre Making Master Lab – Devising/Performing/Directing (with Rachael Maza and Kamara Bell-Wykes) – 18-22 February 2019

This is your opportunity to immerse yourself in a week of play, exploration and creation with ILBIJERRI’s artistic team. Collaborate with other First Nations artists to seed and explore creative ideas with a focus on performance and directing craft.

BlackWrights is open to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples only. First Peoples of Victoria are strongly encouraged to apply.

You cannot save or return to your application so please have everything ready to submit as per the instructions in the BlackWrights application guide.

Please note successful applicants to the Creators Program are guaranteed a place in all Master Labs.

All unsuccessful applicants for the Creators Program will also be considered for the Master Labs so you do not need to apply separately.
